• Warn students that not everyone speaks English in other countries. It may be considered polite to greet people in the language of their country.

• Students should learn some basic phrases before the trip to enable them greet people and to ask questions related to time, travel, food, locations, etc.

• A phrase book is very handy. Information about menus and travel items are a plus in this resource. We suggest an actual, paper book. We have had students try to use an online source, but wi-fi was not always available. Others have had an app on their phone, but it wasn’t as quick as thumbing through a phrase book.
